Based on true events ‘Safe Haven’ follows two British diplomats and a Kurdish refugee between the Kurdish mountains and Whitehall in 1991. A small UK team and refugee struggle against time and policy to push for government intervention as Saddam Hussein’s forces crush the Kurdish uprising and two million civilians flee into freezing mountains, made visible by live TV. It explores how moral conviction and diplomatic pressure helped avert genocide, including Operation Safe Haven. The new production is written by former diplomat Chris Bowers and directed by Yad Deen (Kurdish-British writer/director). Running time 2 hours 20 minutes including interval; age guidance 12+. The programme includes post-show events: 25 June meet comedian Kae Kurd; 26 June panel with Sir John Jenkins (ex-UK Ambassador) and others; 27 June musical performance by Kurdish singer Suna Alan following the show. Content warnings include themes of discrimination or prejudice, references to torture or war, grief or bereavement, trauma, death and genocide, graphic imagery, loud noises, gunshots, flashing lights/strobe.
